Articles : GuestBob commented on news For Better or Worse: English Language Reform to Begin in China

It should be noted that the ratio of transfer between English and Chinese isn’t 1:1. In addition to the overall total for Chinese being raised by thirty points, twenty points also went to the arts/sciences section of the exam. Very few articles have reported this because it detracts from their attempts to describe ... Full Comment>>

Once again fact checking fails: there are 48 territories which issue visas to Chinese citizens on arrival. There are 17 territories which require **no visa** for Chinese citizens to be able to visit. This information is literally a Wikipedia search away. Come on. Full Comment>>

Articles : GuestBob commented on news Teaching English in China: Is it Still Worthwhile?

The "bar" has not been raised, it has simply become more of a reality. No bad thing in my opinion either as it's perfectly rational to cut out those people who drift into the classroom for reasons other than wanting to be there to do a job. The changing patterns of English assessment at gaokao level aren't evidence ... Full Comment>>

Articles : GuestBob commented on news A More Western China? 4 Areas Where the West Has Impacted China

I think the idea that China is "grasping Western influences and making them [its] own" is going to become increasingly true in the next few years. The "diaosi" phenomenon is an indication that certain sections of Chinese society are moving straight past Generations X & Y and crashing headlong into Z. Modernity ... Full Comment>>

Wow, some people really hate street food. Personally, I like it and far from being a "foodie" tosser I am the sort of person who has always hoovered up terrible scran. Lamb sticks and fried bread are a natural progression for me. Full Comment>>

Articles : GuestBob commented on news A Second Education: 5 Exams and Tests Expats Can Take in China

GCSEs and iGCSEs are not used to qualify for admission to university programs. "A Levels" are the university entry qualification generally used in England. Your article also seems to suggest that AP examinations can be taken at British Council offices - they cannot, and in case there was any confusion, "A Levels" ... Full Comment>>

Blogs : GuestBob commented on Rencin 's blog Annoying Curiosity

Alot of the behaviour which is excused as "curiosity" in China are things which would never be acceptable if one Chinese person were to do it to another. Behaviour like this isn't curiosity alone, it's curiosity mixed in with an objectification which permits people to behave in an otherwise unthinkable manner. Just ... Full Comment>>

Articles : GuestBob commented on news Education Exodus: Why are Chinese Students Increasingly Flocking Abroad?

I would guesstimate the hierarchy for **undergraduate** study which most tiger parents hold in their head runs something like: 1: A C9 university. 2: A prestigious foreign university (top 50 in the world). 3: A P211 or P985 which specializes in the chosen major. 4: A notable foreign university outside the top 50. 5: ... Articles : GuestBob commented on news Teaching English in China: The Frustrations of a Foreign Teacher

Yeah, it's a shame how trapped alot of people are by the system. I don't envy the task of reforming it though because it is possibly the most complex task anywhere in education. The MoE recently tried to reform classroom CET practice by altering the test battery (2005 CERF) but it didn't achieve much because people ... Full Comment>>

Articles : GuestBob commented on news Teaching English in China: The Frustrations of a Foreign Teacher

It's a reasonably balanced piece but I felt that it was a little too "foreigner problems" in some areas. Alot of the younger staff at schools and universities experience similar issues when they come to teach and are squeezed and shaped by a system which they don't like either. If the article was a little braver it ... Full Comment>>

Articles : GuestBob commented on news How to Successfully Switch ESL Jobs in China

I don't think this article is accurate. Moving from Residence Permit (employer A) to Residence Permit (employer B) doesn't require a Z visa and certainly doesn't require an L. I think the person who wrote this doesn't know the difference between a Z visa and a Residence Permit.
